A review deck for a couples trip built around adventure, natural wonders, culture, and a little luxury—without over-cramming mid-October travel.
This route avoids the classic mistake of trying to include Slovenia, Montenegro, Bosnia, every island, and every waterfall park in one short trip.
Most days deliberately overlap categories, so a “culture day” can still include a hike or kayak and a “nature day” can still include a town or fortress.

Drive times from Google Maps (checked Sept 30, typical traffic). Ferry times are published crossing times — verify October timetables before booking.
| Date | From → To | Time | Dist. | Notes |
|---|
Total driving ≈ 13 h across the trip; biggest days are Oct 12 (Plitvice → Krka → Split, ~3 h) and Oct 18 (~6 h round trip incl. borders).
All links pre-fill dates and 2 adults. Prices are the total for the stay as listed on Sept 30 (USD, may exclude taxes) — they'll move. Scores are Booking /10 and Airbnb /5 with review counts. 🚶 walk times are estimated from each listing's map pin (straight line × 1.3); Airbnb pins are approximate until you book.
Pick up on landing at Zagreb (expect a one-way drop fee). Keep it through Omiš and Klis on Oct 13, then return it in Split that evening — so the Split stay needs parking for the night of Oct 12 (or use a public garage on the Old Town edge). Rent a second car in Dubrovnik just for Oct 18 — or book a private driver for Mostar (no border paperwork, ~€300–400 for two). If self-driving into Bosnia, ask the rental company for the cross-border "green card".
Checked on Ferryhopper Oct 10: Oct 14 Split → Hvar has 9 sailings (13:00 Krilo is the pick); Oct 16 Hvar → Dubrovnik has 3 (09:10 Krilo, 10:40 and 16:45 TP Line) — book the 09:10 now. Times, prices and booking links are in Boats & Rentals.
Plitvice sells timed-entry tickets online — book Oct 11 around 11:00 (after Rastoke). Walls tickets are bought on the day; the Dubrovnik Pass bundles walls + Lovrijenac + museums + buses.
Mid-October is the tail of the season: some Hvar hotels, beach bars and Pakleni taxi boats wind down around Oct 15–20. Cetina rafting and Omiš zipline usually run through October but confirm. Sea ~20 °C — swimming is still possible on sunny days.
Sailings checked live on Ferryhopper on Oct 10 for 2 passengers; all had seats on sale. Prices are totals for two. Nothing is booked yet.
9 sailings, foot passengers only, ~1 h. The 13:00 leaves time for the Split palace morning; 15:10 and 15:45 are backups. Booking ahead is optional.

Walk-in on the morning works in October. A 50 cc scooter needs only a car licence; 125 cc may need a motorcycle licence, so ask. Bring your licence plus the International Driving Permit.
Hvar Town ⇄ Stari Grad in ~20 min, with connections to Jelsa and Vrboska. Only a few runs a day, cash to the driver (~€2–4). The off-season timetable is thin, so check before relying on it.
Čazmatrans timetable ↗ · Guide: Hvar Town → Stari Grad without a car ↗
Take the bus or a taxi to Stari Grad, rent a bike there (~€13–15 a day), and ride the flat 2,400-year-old Greek field grid. Grab the free map at the tourist office. Guided e-bike tours run from Hvar Town.

Two options per stop where research turned them up (blogs and booking sites, Oct 2026). Prices are approximate, and small operators may not run every day in mid-October, so confirm dates when booking. Each option also has a card in the activity explorer.

|---|---|---|---|
| Oct 10–11 | Zagreb | Štrukli class + Dolac market · book ↗ Make štrukli, tasting of cured meats, cheese & wine · ~3 h · ~$95 pp · Sunday morning before the drive | La Štruk (no booking) Štrukli specialists by Tkalčićeva — easy landing-night dinner |
| Oct 13–14 | Split | Market → 3-course cooking class · book ↗ Pazar market, Gligora cheese, cook lunch with wine · ~5 h · ~€110–130 pp · no longer fits unless you drop the Split morning sights | Old Town tasting walk · book ↗ ~5 stops + liqueur, doubles as a history walk · ~3 h · ~€70–90 pp · Oct 12 or 13 evening |
| Oct 11 | Plitvice | Lika home cooking class, Rastovača · book ↗ Peka lamb & veal, polenta, uštipci, rakija · ~4 h · ~$92 pp · Oct 11 evening after Rastoke/Barać | No second option found. Lička kuća dinner or a local cheese/honey farm tasting instead. |
| Oct 13 | Omiš | Soparnik cooking class (Poljica) · book ↗ The local chard pie baked in embers, with wine · ~2–3 h · afternoon after rafting | No second option found. Radmanove Mlinice's peka bread and lunch is already in the plan. |
| Oct 14–15 | Hvar | Farm-to-table class, Stari Grad Plain · book ↗ Garden-picked produce, octopus stew or black risotto, sunset · ~4 h | Market → Velo Grablje village class · book ↗ Hvar Town market, transfer, 3-course lunch · ~4–5 h · ~€100 pp |

Ban Jelačić Square → cathedral → Stone Gate → St. Mark's Church → Lotrščak Tower and the funicular down. About 2 h at an easy pace.
Zagreb's most original museum, open 9–21 in October. Next to St. Mark's.
Štrukli at La Štruk, then drinks on Tkalčićeva. Dolac market closes ~15:00 on Saturdays, so do it Sunday morning instead.
Loop walk among the water mills and cascades (~€5), the working 18th-century mill, coffee over the falls at Vodena Ovca, and bread from Pod Rastočkim Krovom for lunch in the park.
Walk the Upper Lakes first while they're quieter, take the Kozjak boat, then the Lower Lakes and Veliki Slap facing the falls. Expect slippery boardwalks after the rain and strong waterfalls.
Lamb under the bell at Lička kuća by Entrance 1, or the Rastovača home cooking class.
Open 8:00–18:00 until Oct 15. Lozovac entrance, a 1.5 h boardwalk loop, then lunch in Skradin. Broader and more river-like than Plitvice; no swimming.
Diocletian's Palace and the bell tower in daylight, Marjan's Vidilica viewpoint for sunset (~18:20), then the Riva. That frees the Oct 14 morning before the Hvar boat.
Most reliable adventure format: scenic canyon, rapids, swimming/calm sections, half-day footprint.
Most memorable if operating: swimming, scrambling, jumps/rappels depending on level.
Great pairing with rafting; high canyon views without technical skill.
Mirabela is easy from town; Fortica is the better real hike and viewpoint.
Klis was the Oct 12 pick in the old plan; it now caps this day on the drive back. Spit-roast lamb at Perlica, or the Split Old Town food tour.
If river operators are closed or conditions are poor, convert the day into a mountain viewpoint/nature day. This is the strongest true substitute for Omiš.
Peristyle, cathedral and bell tower, cellars, Golden Gate and the Pazar market, from ~8:00 to 13:00. Marjan's Vidilica viewpoint at sunrise if you're keen.
St. Stephen's Square, cathedral, old lanes, waterfront and Franciscan Monastery make this a compact half-day cultural stop.
The classic Hvar view over town and the Pakleni Islands. Short climb, large payoff.
This is where the trip should feel slower and more polished after Plitvice + Omiš.
Best Hvar substitute if you want the day to be more active: climbing/via ferrata territory, steep vineyards, sea cliffs and wine.
Pile Gate, Stradun, side alleys, Old Port and dinner. Keep it atmospheric, not exhaustive.
Cable car or hike for the classic overhead view of Dubrovnik, Lokrum and the coastline.
If ferry/weather timing is rough, just do Old Town at night and move Srđ to Oct 17.
Do this first while fresh. The wall circuit is the single attraction in Dubrovnik most worth protecting from fatigue or bad timing.
Lokrum gives forest, monastery ruins, botanical gardens and a tiny salt lake; kayak is the more active version if sea conditions are excellent.
Nature opener; wide waterfall amphitheater. Swim only if weather/water temperature cooperate.
Fortified Ottoman hillside village with quick climb and Neretva views.
Stari Most, bazaar, riverbanks, mosque viewpoint, Bosnian coffee and food.
Buna spring + dervish monastery; strong but squeezes Mostar time if done on a group schedule.
With a private driver and smooth borders, do all four. With a group tour or delays, protect Mostar first, then Kravica.
Leave margin for traffic, packing and airport timing. Do not make this another sightseeing day.
Small waterfront town close to Dubrovnik Airport. Good final walk, lunch, Bukovac House or Račić Mausoleum without risking the flight.
Every nonstop flight on Oct 19 from Dubrovnik, Split and Zagreb to a European hub United flies from, all under 3 h. Prices are the cheapest one-way economy fare per person on Google Flights (checked Oct 10, USD; usually hand-baggage only). ☀️ Same day = lands by ~10:45, early enough to try for a late-morning United departure. 🌙 Overnight = sleep at the hub and fly standby on Oct 20. Check United's actual Oct 19 departure times and loads before choosing.
Lands 09:30, ~2.5 h before typical United departures, at the gateway you already flew through. Croatia Airlines / Lufthansa, $321.
$51 on Ryanair (Lauda), lands 10:05. Only worth it if United's Vienna flight has good standby odds that day. Small personal item only.
DBV → Munich 17:05 ($247) or → Frankfurt 18:55 ($265), sleep at the hub, then the first United flight on Oct 20. Gives you a last morning in Dubrovnik or Cavtat.
| From | To hub | Departs → Arrives | Airline | Flight | Price | Connection |
|---|
Getting to the airport from your Dubrovnik hotel: DBV ~30 min · SPU ~3 h drive · ZAG ~6 h drive or a 55-min domestic flight (only makes sense if you reposition on Oct 18, which costs the Mostar day).
